Install OpenVPN on a Synology NAS

1. De-activate IPv6
2. Open your Synology control panel

3. Click Network

4. Click Network Interface tab in the menu

5. If you have earlier VPN-profiles you need to delete them before proceeding

If you do not have any earlier VPN profiles, you can go to the next step.

6. Create a VPN profile

Click Create and choose Create VPN profile.

Choose OpenVPN as your VPN Connection Method and then click Next.

7. Choose server

Then click Next.

8. Continue configuration

In the next step, you need to enter the advanced settings. Make sure the following settings are chosen:


Enable compression on the VPN link Chosen
Use default gateway on remote network Chosen
Allow other network devices to... Do not choose
Reconnect when the VPN connection is lost Chosen

Then click Apply.

9. Go back to your control panel and choose Task Scheduler

10. Choose Create and then User-defined script

11. Enter the following settings and save them
Task OpenVPN
User root
Enabled Uncheck, so that it is not chosen.
User-defined script
12. Highlight the row, and choose Run

13. Confirm that you wish to run the script

14. Connect

It is now time to connect to OVPN. Go to the control panel, then Network then the Network Interface-tab in the menu. Choose OVPN and click Connect

15. Finished

You should now see your Status as Connected. If not, contact customer support and we will help you get started.
